Sessions 1 and 2
These sessions will cover common grammatical errors for native-Spanish speaking students. They will also look into the effects of culture and the use of translation software on writing.
Session 3
The session will look at the kinds of errors non-native speakers from different language backgrounds make as well as suggested strategies and resources to use with non-native speakers. Participants are welcome to bring non-native speakers’ writing samples to ask about.
Presenters
- Gwen Barclay-Toy has been teaching composition and ESL since 1975, most recently at Durham Technical Community College. Her educational background is in English, linguistics, Spanish and adult education.
- Dr. Janyth Fredrickson is the Executive Vice President at Alamance Community College. Her teaching experience is in Spanish and English as a Second Language and her educational background is in Spanish, ESL and adult education.
- Clara Vega is a Spanish Instructor at Alamance Community College. She has taught Spanish for seven years. Her educational background in Spanish, adult education and medicine.
