How to Read Microsoft Works Files in Microsoft Word
If you use Microsoft Word but your students send you documents written in Microsoft Works, indicated by a ".wps" file extension, Microsoft has developed a file converter that will permit you to read "Works" files in Word. To install and use the converter, please follow these steps:
  1. Go to this website and download the document converter:

    http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/wp6rtf.aspx

The download is free and will walk you through the installation. You should click the blue "download now" button, then choose the “open” button. When prompted to install the program, click "yes".

  2. Then click "yes" to accept the license agreement.
  3. The files will install automatically. Once they have installed, close Internet Explorer and any other open programs, and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

  4. Now that the converter is installed, follow these directions to open any “.wps” file extension documents sent to you.

  5. Locate the file sent to you from the student, either in your email program or other program where the student has submitted the file, such as a Blackboard 6 gradebook learning unit assignment. Click the file name as shown below:

  6. When the "File Download" dialog box appears, click "Save":

  7. When the "Save As" dialog box appears, choose where you want to save the file in the “Save in:” area and change the file name if you like. Notice that you are saving the file as ".wps" which indicates that the file is Microsoft Works. Then click the "Save" button.

  8. You can now close the "Download complete" box.

  9. Open Microsoft Word.

  10. Look to the top menu bar and click on “File” and choose “Open” to have this window (below) open.
  11. Locate the folder and the saved file in the “Look in” area, click on it once to highlight it, then click the Open button.
  12. Microsoft Word will now automatically open the “.wps” file extension document.
  13. You can now save the document in Word format using the “.doc” file extension.

Choose “File” and then “Save as” and it will already have the .doc file type listed.

    Click Save.

You can edit it and resave the document in the “.wps” file format if resending it back to the student.

Here is how to do this:

Once you have completed your editing, look to the top menu bar and choose “file” and then choose “save as”.

Click on the “Save as type” dropdown window and scroll down until you see the proper file format. Most versions will use “Works 4.0 for Windows (*.wps)”

Choose the format and then click save. Remember where you save it. You can now email it back to your student as an attachment
