Introduction

If you want to add an assignment to your Blackboard 6 course, you will use the "Assignments" link in the "Content Areas" of the Blackboard 6 Control Panel. The following steps explain how to create a series of assignments in a folder in the Assignments section of a Blackboard 6 course.

Blackboard 6 gives instructors the ability to create several different types of assignments or content in the assignments section of the course. Thus it is desirable to create a series of assignment folders or modules in the Assignments section of the course. In that way, students can see an overview or outline of all the course content. The sample page below is from the home page of an actual course, CUL 112 Nutrition for Food Service Professionals.

When the instructor or students click on the "Assignments" button in the course, they will see the following page. The course instructor has used the Control Panel to create a series of folders in the Assignments area of the course:

If you enter the "Module One" folder, you will see a series of assignments that illustrate the types that an instructor can create by using the "Control Panel" of the course. Notice that each assignment title is preceded by an icon. Each icon represents a particular type of assignment.

Add ItemThe Item icon indicates text instructions and descriptions, such as module objectives and reading assignments.
Add External LinkThe URL icon indicates a link to another Web site. This feature is useful for directing students to an Internet location for research.
Add Learing Unit Assignmentthe Learning Unit/Assignment icon indicates a writing assignment link. When students click the "View/Complete" link, they will receive a new screen with directions for typing a pargraph or attaching a file. When the student submits the assignment, the instructor can read, make comments on, and evaluate through the gradebook in the Assessment section of the Control Panel.
Add Course LinkThe Course Link icon indicates a link to another part of the course. In the example below, the link directs students to the Discussion Board where they will complete an activity.
Add TestThe Test icon indicates a quiz that will be graded by the Blackboard test manager. When students click on the link to the quiz and then complete the quiz, they will receive a grade and feedback if so designed by the instructor. The grades will also be collected in the instructor's gradebook available in the "Assessment" section of the Control Panel.

To create any of these types of assignments, you will always begin by clicking on the "Control Panel" link at the bottom of the navigation frame in your course:

Note: You can use either the button style or text style for your navigation frame. To change the style, click on the "Control Panel" link and then the "Settings" link in the "Course Options" area. In the "Setting" area, click on the "Course Design" link and then the "Course Design" area where you can modify the navigation style for your course.

At this point the "Control Panel" page will appear. Click on the "Assignments" link in the "Content Areas" to create or modify an assignment.

Note: For more information
on using the Control Panel,
please click here.

When the "Assignments" page appears, you can add several differerent types of content:

  1. Folders: Create folders for each unit or module of study for your course.
  2. Items: Create instruction or description "items" inside each folder to provide students with unit or module objectives and instructions or descriptions for completing the assignments.
  3. URL Links: Create
URL links to other Web sites for research.
  4. Course Links: Create links to other parts of the course, such as the discussion board for group discussion or to the syllabus to explain grading policies.
  5. Learning Units: Create learning units assignments that students can submit through the course and teachers can evaluate, comment on, and publish grades for without having to leave the course.

For instructions on creating these types of content in the Assignments section of the course, click on the appropriate section below. NOTE: These same functions are available for the "Course Documents" section of the course, but typically you would use the Course Documents section to create a series of study guides or other longer reading assignments as supplements to the Assignments section modules.
