Add a Link to a Web Site

  1. If you want to students to research information on another Web site, first locate that Web site and copy the URL (Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web). To copy the URL, or address of the site, move your mouse so the pointer is to the right of the URL, located in the "Address" box. Click your left mouse button to highlight the address and then click your right mouse button and "copy":

  2. Then open a new browser window and login to your course. Enter the Control Panel and then the Assignments section. Then click on the name of the folder. When you enter the folder, click the "URL" icon.

  3. When the "Add External Link" page appears, paste into the URL box the address that you have copied from a Web site that you want students to access.

  4. Give a brief descriptive name to create the link in your Assignments section and then a brief description or instructions. Be sure to check the "Options" select boxes to make the link visible, to open the link in a new window since the link is not a component of your course, and also to track the number of views if later you want to check which students accessed the link at a particular time.

  5. If you are working on the course with another instructor and want to identify who added the link, click the "metadata" option and supply your name at the prompt.

  6. Finally, be sure to check the "submit" button. When you do, you will be returned to the folder, which will display the new external link:

  7. Notice the "tracking" button, which you can use to check which students have accessed this section of the course. Notice the number in front of the link name. The indicates the position this component will be displayed in the folder. You can change the position by clicking on the number and choosing a different position number.
