- If you are going to create an entire course that will last for one semester, you can organize your assignments most effectively if you create a series of folders that correspond to units or modules of study throughout the course. A student would then enter the Assignments area of the course by clicking on the link to that section on the navigation frame of the course. Then the student would see the series of folders. To create a folder in the Assignments area of the course, first enter your course and click on the Control Panel link. Then click on the "Assignments" link the the "Content Areas" section of the Control Panel. Then click on the "Folder" button above and the "Add Folder" page will appear:
- You can use the select box to choose from a list of default folder titles, such as "Essays." You may wish to specify a title more appropriate for the subject matter that you will introduce to your students below the "Name" box. Then enter a brief description of the contents of the folder in the "Text" box. Then check the "No" radio button so that the folder is not visible to students until you have prepared all the assignments in the folder. You can also make the folder visible but restrict the date when the folder will become visible to students. Finally, click the "Submit" button to create the folder with its title and description of contents. Caution: This text box should be used only to describe briefly the contents of the folder. After you create the folder, you will then create assignments inside the folder as described below.
- After you submit the folder information, you will return to the "Assignments" section where you will see your new folder. The number beside it indicates its position in the Assignments section. When you add more folders, you can change their position in the Assignments section by choosing a new number from the number list box. The students will not see these numbers. If you click on the "OK" button, you will be returned to the Control Panel to work on other parts of your course. If you want to return to the course itself, use the small link at the top of the screen. If you decide that you want to modify the folder name or description, click on the "Modify" button to the right of the folder name. If, however, you want to add content inside the folder, click on the folder name link, in this case "Module One: Introduction to Nutrition," to begin adding content to the folder.
- Remember: If you want to make an Assignments folder not visible to students until you have added all the text items, course and Web links, learning unit assignments, and tests, click on the "Control Panel" button in your course, and then click the "Modify" button beside the name of the folder. Then under "2 - Options" check "No" beside the question "Do you want to make the folder visible?" The above image indicating that the folder is not available to students will appear in the Assignments section of your Control Panel. The result will be that the students will not see the folder name and thus will be unable to access any of the items, assignments, tests, or links inside the folder until you make the folder "available" or "visible."
- To make a folder available that you have hidden from view, enter the Control Panel of your course, and click on the Assignments link. Then click on the "modify" button beside the folder name. As shown in the image below of the "Modify folder" option, scroll down to "2 - Options" and check "Yes" after the question, "Do you want to make the folder visible?" Finally click the "Submit" button, as shown in the image below:
- After you click the "Submit" button, the folder will become visible, as noted in the Control Panel:
- Then students will be able to see the when they click on the "Assignments" button in the course:
